Hamad Airport to Doha City: Taxi, Metro, Uber and Real Prices

This guide contains links to our booking partners. If you book through them, Amivoy may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

You have just landed at Hamad International Airport (DOH) and need to get into Doha. You have four real choices: the Doha Metro, a Karwa taxi, a ride-hailing app such as Uber, or a pre-booked transfer. Each one makes sense for a different traveller. This guide compares them side by side, with real prices, journey times and the exact pickup points, so you can walk out of arrivals knowing what to do.

Prices in this guide were checked in October 2026. Taxi fares are planning estimates; the final price depends on traffic, route and waiting time.

Quick Comparison: Hamad Airport to Doha City

Option Typical cost Time to central Doha Best for
Doha Metro (Red Line) QAR 2 (standard), QAR 10 (Goldclub) About 25–35 min Solo travellers with light luggage, budget trips
Karwa taxi About QAR 40–70 About 15–25 min Heavy luggage, late arrivals, door-to-door
Uber and other apps Dynamic (check the app) About 15–25 min Price shown upfront, card payment
Pre-booked transfer Fixed price, agreed in advance About 15–25 min Families, groups, first-time visitors, business trips
Karwa bus From about QAR 2.50–3 Longer Residents and very tight budgets

Option 1: Doha Metro (Cheapest)

The Red Line has its own station at Terminal 1, a short walk from arrivals. Trains are clean, air-conditioned and accessible, and the ride to Msheireb in the city centre takes about 25 to 35 minutes.

Metro fares

  • Standard single journey: QAR 2
  • Standard day pass: QAR 6
  • Standard Travel Card: QAR 10 (reusable, credit added on top)
  • Goldclub single journey: QAR 10. Goldclub day pass: QAR 30
  • Children under 5: free

Buy tickets at the vending machines or the customer-service counter in the station, then tap in and tap out at the gates. Note that the metro card is a Qatar Rail card; it is not the same as the Karwa Smartcard used on buses.

Where the Red Line goes

From the airport, the Red Line runs north through Al Doha Al Jadeda and Msheireb (the main interchange for the Gold and Green lines) to West Bay, DECC, Katara and Lusail. Make sure you board a train towards the city, not the Al Wakra branch. For Souq Waqif or the National Museum, change at Msheireb to the Gold Line.

Metro hours

The metro runs daily but not 24 hours. Service typically starts at 5am Saturday to Thursday and at 9am on Friday, with last trains around 1am. Check the Qatar Rail journey planner app for first and last trains on your day.

Good to know: the walk from the station at the other end to your hotel can be 10 to 20 minutes, which feels long with a big suitcase in summer heat. If your hotel is not close to a station, a taxi is often the better choice.

Option 2: Karwa Taxi (Easiest Door-to-Door)

Karwa is Qatar’s official taxi service, run by Mowasalat. The Taxi Pavilion is at the left end of the Arrivals Hall, and cars are waiting around the clock.

Karwa airport taxi fares

  • Airport starting fare: QAR 25
  • Per kilometre: about QAR 1.60 by day, about QAR 1.90 at night or outside Doha

Typical taxi prices from Hamad Airport (estimates)

Destination Estimated fare
Souq Waqif / Msheireb QAR 40–55
Central Doha QAR 40–60
West Bay QAR 50–70
The Pearl-Qatar QAR 65–90
Lusail Marina QAR 75–105

The trip to central Doha or West Bay usually takes 15 to 25 minutes, longer at rush hour. Karwa accepts Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay and local NAPS cards, but keep a little cash as a backup. Larger vans are available for families and heavy luggage. Travellers with reduced mobility can arrange a suitable vehicle in advance by calling Mowasalat on +974 4458 8888.

Option 3: Uber and Other Ride-Hailing Apps

Uber, Badrgo and Ryde are authorised to pick up at Hamad Airport. Prices are dynamic (they change with demand, car type and traffic), but you see the quote before you confirm, and you pay by card in the app.

Where to meet your Uber at Hamad Airport

Ride-hailing cars do not use the Taxi Pavilion. They pick up from a designated area in the multi-level car park:

  1. Exit the Arrivals Hall through Gate 3.
  2. Cross the service roads and enter the multi-level parking building.
  3. Follow the ride-hailing signs (turn left, then right near the escalators) to the pickup zone.

Pickup zones can change, so follow the instructions in the app. Ride-hailing is also your best option after the last metro train.

Option 4: Pre-Booked Airport Transfer

A pre-booked transfer means a driver meets you in arrivals, helps with bags and takes you straight to your hotel for a price you agreed before you flew. It usually costs more than a metered taxi for a solo traveller, but it is often the best value for:

  • Families and groups who need a van or child seats
  • Late-night arrivals when you do not want to queue or navigate
  • Business travellers who need a receipt and a fixed cost
  • First-time visitors who do not have a local SIM yet

Many four and five-star hotels also offer their own transfers; ask when you book, but compare the price first. You can compare Doha airport transfers here.

Option 5: Karwa Public Bus

Karwa buses leave from the Bus Pavilion to the right of the Arrivals Hall. Some routes run 24 hours (for example L533 to Al Thumama, about QAR 3, and T612 to the Industrial Area bus station, about QAR 2.50–3). Buses have luggage space, but they are slower and mainly serve residential areas, so for most visitors the metro is the better budget option. Buses use Karwa payment (Smartcard or the Karwa Journey Planner app), not the metro card.

What About Renting a Car at the Airport?

Major rental companies have desks at Hamad Airport. A car is worth it if you plan desert or coastal day trips, but for a short city stay the metro and taxis are cheaper and easier. Check the licence rules for your nationality before you book: see our guide to renting a car in Qatar as a tourist, read our car rental tips or compare car rental prices.

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • Travelling light, hotel near a metro station: take the metro. QAR 2 is hard to beat.
  • Big suitcases or summer heat: take a Karwa taxi from the Taxi Pavilion.
  • Want to see the price first and pay by card: use Uber from the multi-level car park.
  • Family, group or late-night arrival: pre-book a transfer.
  • On a layover: see our Doha layover guide for 8, 12 and 24-hour plans.

Tips for a Smooth Arrival in Doha

  • Get data before you leave the plane. Ride-hailing and maps need internet. Install a travel eSIM before you fly: compare eSIM plans for Qatar or see our best eSIM for Qatar guide.
  • Use official pickup points only. Politely ignore anyone offering you a ride inside the terminal.
  • Do not mix up cards. Metro uses Qatar Rail cards; buses use Karwa payment.
  • Count the full journey. A QAR 2 metro ride plus a taxi from the station can cost more time than a direct taxi.
  • Check the app planners. Qatar Rail and Karwa Journey Planner show live times and routes.

Conclusion

Getting from Hamad Airport to Doha is quick and safe whichever option you pick. The metro is the cheapest at QAR 2, a Karwa taxi to the centre costs roughly QAR 40–70, Uber shows you the price upfront, and a pre-booked transfer gives families and late arrivals a fixed price with no queues. Choose by luggage, time of day and where your hotel is, and you will be in the city in under 40 minutes.
