Many airlines now charge for cabin bags but still let you bring one free personal item. The tomtoc 28L is built for exactly that: small enough to go under the seat on most international airlines, but organised like a mini suitcase so a long weekend fits inside.

What makes it work

• Opens like a suitcase: the clamshell main compartment unzips fully, so you pack in layers instead of stuffing from the top.
• Laptop section that opens 90–180°: fits a 16-inch laptop and a 13-inch iPad and lays open for easier security checks.
• Lockable tech zippers: YKK zippers on the device section take a small cable lock (up to 4 mm, not included).
• Easy to grab: top and side handles for pulling it from overhead bins, plus a luggage strap for your suitcase handle.
• Comfortable: 3D padded back, thick shoulder straps and a chest buckle.

Key specs

• Size: 17.72 × 11.81 × 7.87 in (45 × 30 × 20 cm)
• Weight: 2.09 lb (950 g)
• Volume: 28L

Know before you buy

• At 45 cm it is larger than the strictest free personal-item limits (some budget airlines allow only 40 × 30 × 20 cm), so check your airline.
• 28L suits 2-4 days; for a week, a 40L bag is the better match.
